Amuri school off to SI netball

For the first time in 10 years the Amuri Area School will be represented at the South Island Secondary School Netball tournament.
Twelve students will travel to Nelson in late August to compete after having trained together since June.
It follows a decision by Lucy Newton and Krissy Griggs to team up and see if the school would get a squad together for the tournament.
Head of Sport Gavin Cate had been thinking along similar lines and quickly swung in behind the pair, recruiting a team manager, Kiley Bailey and a mentor for the coaches, Jen Hooper, Performance manager for Mainland Netball. Both will be in Nelson to help support the squad.
The team is slightly different from other sides heading to the tournament. Most have trained together all season, but the Amuri girls have been selected from surrounding clubs that play in the Hurunui Netball competition.
Selection was also opened up at trials to all players at Amuri Area School with the 12 girls selected ranging in age from 13 years to 18 years.
Coach Krissy Griggs says usually the tournament is designed for senior school students.
‘‘However, we decided that we could develop these younger girls for the future of school netball and the netball community,’’ she says.
The squad is: Courtney Hale-McKinstry, Ashnoor Kaur, Isabella Neill, Anna Crean, Taylar Hubbard, Emilee Hickey, Yuane Haasbroek, Nada Simmonds, Rosa Thompson, Kelly Rutherford, Leigh Higgins and Jazmin Cuff.Buy KicksAsics Onitsuka Tiger
