Ghostlike, the Weka Pass steam train emerged out of the darkness to pull alongside the Waikari Station last Saturday night.

The night time special, put on by the Weka Pass Railway, proved so popular tickets were snapped up within two hours of the trip being advertised.

A second night trip planned for Saturday, August 19, has already sold out and the Weka Pass Railway is urging those who have missed out on the night trip to jump aboard the regular Sunday trains.

Those who saw the train pull in to Waikari watched in awe as the steam lit up in the night air thanks to the rays of the train’s own light.

Around 150 people disembarked on to the platform and crossed the highway to snap photos of the train with steam billowing skyward.

Others took the opportunity to buy fish and chips before climbing on board for the 12.8km trip back to Waipara through the Weka shoesSneakers
