Shake up in town

Another generation has come to know and love Elvis Presley’s songs as the Hurunui Theatre Group prepares for the musical ‘‘All Shook Up’’.
The past three months have seen North Canterbury actors from Rangiora to Greta Valley rock the Waipara Hall as they rehearse for the latest production.
The musical tells the story of Natalie, a grease monkey from small town America, where the Mayor, Matilda Hyde has outlawed tight pants and public necking, enforcing the Marnie Eisenhower Decency Act, causing despair among the town’s residents.
When hip swivelling, motor bike riding, guitar playing Chad arrives in town, a broken down juke box comes to life and people start falling in love all over the place.
As in all good love stories the true path to love isn’t smooth and Natalie’s plan to win Chad’s heart goes awry with hilarious results. The show culminates in a triple wedding, but does Natalie get her man?
The cast is a great mix with farmers, teachers, natural healers, retirees and students all pitching in to to bring a night of music and laughs to North Canterbury.
This year there are new performers who have been well supported by the more seasoned actors in the group.
Perry Spicer is at the helm again as director, Gail Fox is musical director and Tony Kingston rocks on the piano. The leads are Natalie, played by Anna McBreen from Amberley and Chad, played by Marty Ashby from Rangiora.
Sylvia, the bar maid, is portrayed by Kim Jackson, from Waipara, while Dennis the geek and side kick is played by Andy Gardner from Waiau.
Terry Livingstone, from Rangiora, takes on the role as Jim, Natalie’s dad and Anna Bennetto from Amberley and Jean Durand from Hawarden share the role of Lorraine (Sylvia’s daughter).
Deanna (Matilda’s daughter) is played by Nisha Joliffe from Amberley.
The musical runs from September 8 to 17, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 8pm with a matinee at 2pm on Saturday 10th.
