A friendship seat has been donated to Kaiapoi North School by the Kaiapoi Menz Shed.

The seat is a memorial to Tania Reid, who had been a teacher at the school for 17 years before her death from cancer in October.

Menz Shed members were asked by the school to make a memorial seat for Tania soon after her death.

After fire destroyed two classrooms at the school last month, members told the school they would like to donate the seat.

“It was a special project to be involved in which gave us a warm, fuzzy feeling,” Menz Shed member Bob Smith said.

The men bought the old seat at Bell’s Auctions in Kaiapoi and gave it a modern makeover in a riot of rainbow colours.

The seat was delivered to the school earlier this month and has now been installed in the playground.

Its purpose is to give children who are feeling sad, lonely or sick a safe place to sit so that other children or teachers will know they need help.

Kaiapoi North School office manager Julie Garing said the school was “so grateful and thrilled” to receive the donation from the Menz Shed.

“They are an awesome bunch of guys.”
