Voting for the North Canterbury Business Awards People’s Choice category has started, with thousands already lodged.

Of the 60 entries going forward to the gala evening on August 31 at Ohoka, 16 are in the Hellers Emerging Business category.

Awards organiser and business development manager at Enterprise North Canterbury, Miles Dalton, says this shows a strong contingent of new businesses in the region.

Voting for the People’s Choice Award via the Enterprise North Canterbury website opened on July 2 and runs until August 19.

The business with the most votes on that date will be crowned winner in the People’s Choice category, supported by the North Canterbury News

Within 24 hours of the voting opening, more than 2500 votes had been submitted online.

The much-coveted award is a favourite among entrants, as it acknowledges support from their customers and members of the local community.

The 2016 People’s Choice Award winner was Oxford-based skincare company Oasis Beauty, which also took home the Manufacturing Award.

Owner Stephanie Evans says she was proud of the award as all staff got behind it. “I was really pleased for them to win it. It brought us all together as a team.

“The team used every possible avenue that they could find; we used our social media channels, we emailed our customers asking them to vote, we asked our families, and we asked our suppliers that we work with – anybody that had a touch point with our business.

“Internally, staff morale improved from winning these two awards. It was a big pat on the back for the entire team.”

Mr Dalton, says the People’s Choice Award is a great way to involve customers and staff.

“The business owners and staff all tend to get on board and find inventive ways to promote it.”

“It’s a good excuse for businesses to promote their brand, it can be a lot of fun and it’s a great confidence boost to the winners. The public love to get involved because they like to support their favourite businesses, and there is also a fantastic prize up for grabs for everyone who votes.”

To vote, go online to northcanterbury.co.nz/choice before August 19. Voting is open to all members of the public, including owners and staff members of businesses involved.

Winners of all awards will be announced at the gala evening.
