Hunt sure to be a rip snorter

The Rip Snorter hunt is on again, with up to $4500 in cash prizes up for grabs.

The annual Parnassus/Cheviot pig hunt, which caters for the whole family, will be held in the second week of August.

Last year, 184 entered the Cheviot Home and School Association’s main fundraiser, up 47 on the previous year. In all, 99 animals were weighed in.

Registrations are being called by organisers Grant and Tracy Findlay, who expect entries to top those of last year.

No late entries will be accepted after the cut-off of 5pm, Wednesday, August 8.

Hunters can head for the hills and their favourite hunting haunts after Friday, August 10, at 12.01am.

The weigh-in at the Cheviot Rugby Club grounds, in Ward Street, Cheviot, is from 11.30am to 2.30pm, on Sunday, August 12, giving hunters plenty of time to catch a prize-winning entry.

Classes in the open section are the heaviest boar, heaviest sow, average boar, average sow, overall average, the longest tusk and the heaviest deer.

Young hunters, aged 10-16, also get a chance to compete for honours in the boar and sow sections.

And the little people are not left out. Children have a chance to take home a prize, with sections for hares, rabbits and possums, the longest possum tail, and the best-dressed little critter. Tracy says “awesome” sponsorship means everyone registered will take home a prize.

“Even if you don’t have a pig to weigh-in, there are spot prizes all registered hunters get to select from,” she says. “We look after all the hunters. That is the good thing about the competition,” she says.

The prize-giving will start with the heaviest boar and then a group of 20 hunters will be called upon to pick a prize off a table.

Likewise, after each section, another group will be called up to select a prize.

There are also four Lucky Prize draws in the open section, sponsored by the main sponsor, Anderson Earthmoving Ltd.

Tracy says the money raised from the hunt goes toward “little extras” at the Cheviot Area School.

Last year, more than $6500 was raised, with some of the funds going toward a shade area for the senior quad area.

Barbecue and bar facilities will be available on the day.
