Several hundred people gathered at dawn in Kaiapoi today to remember the fallen at a moving Anzac Day service.
Young and old stood shoulder to shoulder, at a service in which young Kaiapoi school pupils played an integral part in the commemorations, at the Kaiapoi Cenotaph in Raven Quay.
Returned servicemen and women marched a short distance to the Cenotaph, joined by service clubs and community groups.
Speeches and reflections were heard as the first tentacles of light stretched over the gathering and the Last Post and Reveille echoed through the streets.
Wreathes were laid and then those attending paid their respects before the ceremony closed.
