The ‘‘creme de la creme’’ of pony club eventing turned out at Mandeville last weekend for the New Zealand Pony Clubs Association (NZPCA) Championships.
Held over three days of competition in North Canterbury last weekend.
Hosted by the Canterbury Area Pony Club, at the Mandeville Sports Ground, home of the Eyreton Pony Club, the three days of competition were hotly contested.
Anne Atkins chairperson of the NZPCA Eventing Championship Organising committee said it was a wonderful weekend.
‘‘The riders did exceptionally well, everyone was happy, and the weather was kind,’’ she said.
There were 135 riders and their horses from all around New Zealand competing. This year the overall winner was the Nelson/Marlborough/West Coast team who had never won the event before and the six riders all came from Greymouth.
The cross-country course was a new purpose-built course designed by Robbie McLean, of Taupo, and included a spectacular Anzac keyhole jump which was popular with riders and spectators.
Next year’s championships will be held in Whangarei.
