If you enjoy a bit of rough and tumble, a great social atmosphere and bucket loads of fun, the Waismack Roller Derby team needs you.

Just when the team, which includes mums, teachers and a midwife, was on a roll having secured a home of its own at the Amberley Domain, a few team members have had to pull out leaving the team short.

Spokesperson Nicola Toki says the team is in danger of becoming an “endangered species” due to one team member moving overseas and a change in circumstances for a couple of other girls.

“We are really short of players. We’ve all worked so hard to form a team, complete our training -Women’s Flat Track Derby Association international skills test – and now we want to teach others and strengthen our team.

“We’d be very sad if we had to walk away on the team after putting so much effort in,” she says.

Some local North Canterbury women have said they are a bit scared to come to training.

“But as someone who hadn’t skated in almost 30 years before joining Waismack, I’d say there’s nothing to be afraid of,” says Nicola from Waipara.

She says the group is a great bunch of women who all want to help each other learn new skills, be safe and keep fit.

The girls recently hosted a Roller Derby at the Woodend Community Centre which was a “fantastic” event, says Nicola. Skates were provided along with good tunes, fun for the whole family, a sausage sizzle and lots of fun. It was “hardcase” for those who had not strapped on a pair of skates for a few years. Anyone wanting to join in the fun contact the group through its Facebook page Waismack Roller Derby.
